Engine protection functions

The ECU provides a number of protection functions in addition to the diagnostic system. Depending on the configured strategy, a protection event can warn the driver, limit engine speed or restrict maximum throttle position.

These functions are intended to protect the engine under abnormal operating conditions. They are separate from the malfunction-indicator-lamp (MIL) diagnostic functions.

Oil pressure monitoring and protection

Scale and validate the oil-pressure sensor before enabling warning or automatic protection functions.

Oil-pressure protection can include lamp on/off thresholds, a minimum pressure requirement after the start-delay period and optional low-pressure engine shutdown. The shutdown threshold can use the Estimated Oil Pressure map together with a calibrated offset so that the minimum acceptable oil pressure can vary with engine operating condition.

Important: do not enable automatic engine shutdown until the sensor scaling, expected-pressure map and shutdown logic have been validated. A sensor or calibration error could otherwise stop the engine unexpectedly.
